Swaby’s Tae Kwon Do Academy

Ages 3 to 6

Junior Taekwondo.

The youngest students at Swaby’s get a class of their own. Short turns on the kicking pad, simple stances, and a lot of practice at the things every three to six year old is still learning: listening, waiting their turn, and trying again when a kick doesn’t land.

Inside a Junior class

Little kicks.
Big moments.

An hour on the mat for a three year old has to move. Junior classes keep it simple and keep everyone involved: stretch together, learn a stance, take a turn on the pad, then sit and cheer for the next kid in line.

Warm up

Stretch together

Legs out, reach for the toes, loosen up the hips. Stretching is where every high kick starts, and little bodies are flexible enough to enjoy it.

Stances

Stand strong

Every kick starts from the feet. Juniors learn to plant them, keep their hands up and hold still in a stance, which is harder than it sounds when you’re four and the whole class is watching.

Pad work

Kick the pad

One at a time, each child steps up and kicks a pad held by an instructor. A clean kick makes a sound they can hear, and they’ll want to do it again.

Taking turns

Wait. Watch. Go.

Sitting along the edge of the mat, watching a classmate and waiting for your name is part of the lesson too. It’s where patience gets practised, and where the cheering comes from.

What they take home

More than a kick.

The kicks are the fun part. What parents tend to notice first is everything that comes with them, the stuff a three to six year old is working on everywhere else too.

Balance

Standing on one leg long enough to kick with the other, without toppling over.

Coordination

Left and right, hands and feet, all working together on purpose.

Listening

Hearing an instruction, then doing it. On the mat, that’s how you get your turn.

Patience

Waiting in line, sitting still and watching while a classmate takes their turn.

Confidence

Stepping up in front of the whole class and giving it everything they’ve got.

Respect

Listening to the instructor and cheering on the classmate whose turn it is.

Belts and what comes next

One stripe
at a time.

In Taekwondo, the belt around a student’s waist shows how far they’ve come. Juniors start at the beginning, like every student at Swaby’s, with black belt as the goal at the end of the road.

Is three too young for Taekwondo?

Junior Taekwondo is built for ages 3 to 6, so your child trains with kids their own size, with short turns and simple drills that suit how young children learn. The free class is the easiest way to find out if they’re ready.

My child is shy. Will they be okay?

Plenty of kids start out quiet. In a Junior class they go one at a time, so nobody is thrown in all at once, and they get to watch a few classmates before it’s their turn.

What should they wear to the free class?

Comfortable clothes they can move in. No uniform is needed for the first visit, and Taekwondo is trained barefoot on the mats.

When are Junior classes?

When you send the form you’ll pick a class time on the next screen. Enrolled students and families see the full class schedule in the Student Portal.

How much does it cost?

The first class is free. Ask about membership when you come in, or call (781) 364-7027.

Will my child have to compete?

Swaby’s students compete at World Martial Arts Federation tournaments. If that interests your family, ask Master Swaby about it when you visit.

What happens when they turn 7?

They move up to Kids Taekwondo, the class for ages 7 to 12, and keep building on everything they learned as a Junior.
